Hmm,
downloaded this game. Looks good, but how to start the main program ?!?
- With Spacebar one can choose the background area, but how do I start the game ???

I tried Return, Start and Joystick Trigger/Button but they all did not work; the ESC-key gave only a blank screen...  so what key starts the game ???    -Andreas Magenheimer.

Hello folks,
at Fandal`s homepage (http://atari.fandal.cz) you can find a lot of programs for download. alas, many of these programs have been converted directly from turbo 2000 tape to diskette. And, as many of you may know, the programs always occupy memory from $0700 upwards. And this is a problem, since none of these programs can be loaded on a real Atari from DOS or gamedos. I tried several gamedos versions (like nano-dos, micro-dos, pico-dos, mypico-dos, micro-sparta-dos) and none of them was able to load such a program.

Ok, so I tried to pack these programs with Code3 Cruncher (2.x and 3.x) to change the memory adress, but this did not work, the packer crashed immediately. Well, there were still Super-Copy and Super-Packer left, but they are limited to 30-32kbytes in size (and I have bigger programs)... so what now ?!?

Is there any kind of relocator or packer program that can change these programs (for example IBMTETRIS.XEX) in such a way, that they *do not use* memory adresses $0700-0BFF, so that they will work at least under a gamedos ?!? Well, I would prefer idiot-proof programs, where one simply loads in the program into the relocator or packer and changes the start adress (or copies it to another adress, like in Superpacker) and the packer/relocator then gives the new end adress and run adress. But it should work with programs that are bigger than 32kbytes in size... and it would be very nice if one could use RAM under the OS (meaning the program should then create/include a small routine to use that memory space, if possible)...   any ideas ?!?   greetings, Andreas Magenheimer.

Hmm,
but I always use FP 2.1 to pack multi-segments into *one* packed segment. It works, as long as there is no init adress, just one run adress at the end...  but I guess thats not what you mean... you are surely talking of multi-segments with several inits after each segment - they cannot be packed with FP this way...

If the total length of a program (Superpacker) or the length of a single segment (DJ-Packer) is a problem, well I always use Fast-Packer first (packs segmentally, uses page 4 to depack) and when it got the program or segment shorter than 30-32kbytes, I use the Superpacker or DJ-PAcker (the one that uses page 5+6 to depack) to pack the program further...   Example: a Tron clone (forgot its name), before packing 279 single sectors, one segment and one run adress, cannot be packed with DJ (segment is too long) nor SP (program to long); packed it first with Fast-Packer to 165 sectors, then with DJ down to 121 sectors - the packed program works fine in the end...   greetings, Andreas Magenheimer.

Hello folks,
ABBUC decided to do another software contest 2006. Attached you will find the rules in various languages - there is only one change to the rules of 2005: the deadline is the 15th of August  (now the same deadline as the hardware contest 2006)...

Regeln für den ABBUC-Software-Wettbewerb 2006
Rules for the ABBUC-Software-Contest 2006
Pravidla pro ABBUC-Software-Contest 2006
Zasady ABBUC-Software-Contest 2006
Reglamento del concurso de software ABBUC 2006

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Regeln für den ABBUC-Software-Wettbewerb 2006:
1) Allgemeine Regeln:

Also dann, viel Spaß beim Programmieren - euer ABBUC Software Ressort.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Rules for the ABBUC-Software-Contest 2006:
1) General Rules:

The Deadline for the software-contest has been set to 15th of August 2006 (until midnight).
ABBUC will therefore spend the following Prices: 1st Place: 500 Euro
2nd Place: 250 Euro
3rd Place: 125 Euro
4th Place: 75 Euro
5th Place: 50 Euro
For all registered contest programs, ABBUC will get the right of a premiere-release on its magazine; the Copyright will still remain by the author, who can use his program freely after the contest. The presentation of the programs will take place at the Unconventional fair in September and on the ABBUC magazines, whereas the decision and pricing will take place at the annual ABBUC meeting in October. There is no need for the author to be present at any of these events, the price will still be send to the author?s postal adress or his bank account, provided that ABBUC has these adresses...

2) Program Types & Size:

The software-contest programs must be one of the following program-types:
a) Game/s, b) Application/s (also Tools, Utilities, etc.) and c) Operating Systems (DOS).
Not allowed are any kinds of demos or intros, also not allowed are any beta- or pre-versions (meaning the contest programs must be finished). For compatibility reasons one must make sure, that the programs work at least on Atari XL or XE computers, which means standard 64k or 128k machines. Additional or extra hardware can be supported, but it must not be a requirement to own this extra hardware to load the program. Believe it or not, the ABBUC Software Ressort, as well as all ABBUC members, will do a ?Quality? and ?Compatibility? check of all registered contest programs...

3) Format and Languages:

The software-contest programs can be send as 5,25? Atari disk(s) or as ATR-image(s), but they must use Single (90k) or Enhanced (130k) density. Furthermore, the program must have a short documentation, this can be included in the program (internally) or as a separate text-file (externally). It is therefore important, that one uses german or at least english language (and explains shortly how the program has to be loaded), so that everyone can handle the program. All Atari 8Bit compatible languages are allowed as programming languages, but all of them have to be compiled in the end, so that one can load the program without having to own a certain programming language. The only exceptions here are Atari Basic and Turbo Basic XL source listings, since every Atari user owns these languages. Lastly one needn?t supply any source-codes for the contest programs, the finished loadable or executable program is enough...

Happy programming wishes the ABBUC Software Ressort !!

Prověření kvality a kompatibility všech soutěžních příspěvků bude provádět ABBUC Software Ressort a všichni členové ABBUCu.

3) Formát a programovací jazyky:

Muad Dib,
did not work on 64k XEGS, also did not work on chinese 64k Atari XE (with newer Os, newer Selftest (c) 1985 Atari and 32kbytes RAM chips). The demo crashed right after the intro-title screen ("Hurek presents Muad Dib") - and this title appeared only as garbage...  Strange thing is, on 64k Atari XL and older 64k XE it works correct...

Well,
no-one votes for R-Type ?!? I do ! My wishlist for Atari8:

3) (old) Prince of Persia

And err, don`t forget R-Type !!  ;-)

Well,
I have 576k RAM available, so playing YAKF is no problem for me.
But I insist that a 64k RAM version (with multiple disk-loads like in Int. / World Karate) would be very good for all Atarians that have only 64k RAM...  Maybe it is possible to load in *one* level / scene / combat screen *after another* and not all of them into RAM...   just a thought...

On the other hand, YAKF is a great game !! In my eyes it is the best (besides space harrier) Atari game of the last five, err ten years ...   -Andreas Magenheimer.

Well,
all prizes (money, money, money) have been sent to the authors recently (including MatoSimi).
There will be another ABBUC Software Contest in 2006 - the rules and the prizes will still be the same, only the deadline will change, think we will choose the 31st of July or maybe the 15th of August 2006...

So, happy programming to all 8Bit Atarians !! Hope to see some many programs from eastern europe (Poland, czech Republic, Slovakia, etc.) in this contest again. Atari programmers from Poland / Czech Rep. / Slovakia are simply the best !!  Merry XMAS from ABBUC, Andreas Magenheimer.

hmm,
personally I don`t like Uridium and there are already 6 uridium clones for Atari available:
- vanax/vanadium (or something like that, see atarimania.com)
- an activision game on cart.
- mirax force by Chris Paul Murray (CPM)
- the sequel to mirax force by the same author
- oxygene by german demo crew TAT
- thunderfox (one of the worst games) by Atari
no more uridium clones or conversions, please !!

hmm, personally I would like to see:
- a Super Mario Bros clone (Bros by KE-Soft and/or Monster hunt by MHS are not so great)
- a Sonix clone
- a Prince of Persia clone (meaning part 1, the old 386 and/or 486 PC version, programmed by the same author as Karateka !)
- an R-Type clone (better than Zybex, please!)
- a racing game with realistic computer opponents (simple gfx like Pitstop 1, but realistic or realtime computer opponents and maybe two players or via multijoy 4 players or via multilink/network 4 players, also realistic/realtime); meaning no random appearance of opponents cars; a tournement mode with approx. 8 different tracks and a point system (like in a F1 race)...

or maybe:
- a sequel to fort apocalypse with new and bigger levels
- a sequel to bruce lee with new and bigger levels
- a a sequel to conan with new and bigger levels
- a sequel to Henry`s House with easier levels but the same good gfx
- a sequel to Mousetrap (Tynesoft/MicroValue) with new levels

enough said. Alas, I cannot help here , since I cannot program. But now you have some good ideas...   -Andreas magenheimer.

And err,
how about a CMC to MPT converter ?!? Think I read somewhere that something like this was available...

Besides, I do own two strange converters:
1) MD8 to CMC : This converter should convert MD8 sounds into CMC format. Alas, the created CMC sounds cannot be played with any CMC player I have...?!?
2) TMC to MOD: this converter should convert TMC into MOD format, but the same thing here, the created MOD sounds cannot be played with any MOD player I have... ?!?

Does someone know why ?!? If you need these two programs to examine, I can send you a copy!
greetings, andreas Magenheimer.

P.S.: I also would like to have a 1) Benjy-soundmon to MPT, 2) Soundmon Prof. (by T.Karwoth) to MPT, 3) Pegasus Soundmonitor to MPT and 4) Black Magic Composer to MPT converter. I love MPT and it also supports samples...

Well,
the latest version now works on a real XL/XE but has some gfx bugs here and there. And err, well - the game is really tough. How many enemies/adversaries (and backgrounds) are there a) in this release and b) in the original game ?!?

Sidenote: The program requires 320k RAM and XRAM bankswitching. Any chance for a 512k cartridge or at least a ROM / bin. image (with cart bankswitching) that works on a 64k Atari ?!?  -Andreas Magenheimer.

Well,
it does not matter if I load/save the mentioned files as Autorun.SYS (under MyDOS 4.50 and 4.51) or *.AR0 (under MyDOS 4.53 and newer versions). The problem is always the same: the programs work alright when loaded manually with option "L" and they do not work when loaded/executed automatically as Autorun.SYS or *.AR0 ...   Anyone knows why ?!?   -Andreas Magenheimer.

38

(6 odpowiedzi, napisanych Software, Gry - 8bit)

Well,
when loading some binary files under MyDOS I discovered some strange behaviour: Loading a ML file (*.COM, *.EXE, *.XEX, etc.) with option "L" from the DUP menu works fine, but loading the same ML file as an autorun.sys (*.AR0 under MyDOS 4.53, 4.54 and 4.55) fails... why ?!?

For example:
1) I loaded Neotracker 1.5 with option "L" and it loads fine; when I rename it to *.AR0 (which is the same as Autorun.SYS under Version 4.53 etc.) it loads the file and crashes after a few seconds...

2) Sysiphos: I appended the game to a Basic-off file (Basicoff.OBJ) and with option "L" it loads and runs fine, renamed to *.AR0 it switches Basic off and immediately loads the DUP.SYS...

Can someone explain me why this happens ?!? Or can someone fix the MyDOS autorun please ?!?
-Andreas Magenheimer.

Well,
since no-one else has posted this yet, I am gonna inform you that there is a color JPG viewer for the A8 available here:

http://rjespino.tripod.com/8bit/colrjpeg/colrjpeg.html

The viewer requires 64k and works great in gr. 8 and 15 modes (high + medium resolution with lots of colours). It also supports some kind of Apac mode...     greetings, Andreas.

Hmm,
well, currently I own 512k XRAM (576k RAM total). but believe me, the ABBUC demos all work ok on 320k compyshop (CS) expanded Ataris. I do have a Compyshop compatible Megaram 2 RAM upgrade with 256k XRAM and since this was not enough for me and many polsih demos did not work with it, I extended it to 512k...

Before upgrading to 512k, all ABBUC demos were tested on the 320k CS machine and they worked fine (be sure to switch off BASIC, otherwise garbage appears here and there - hold down OPTION!). One more thing, looks like the emulator is not emulating RAM upgrades well. Rambo and CS are not the same actually. All demos work on the original machine with a CS upgrade but they do not work on an original machine with Rambo upgrade !! Looks like this is different on the emulator...

CS ramdisks have block 26AE (each with 4 banks, total = 16 banks), original Rambo upgrades by ICD did have blocks ACE (each with 4 banks, total = 12 banks). Meaning the CS *added* 256k to the existing 64k, so you got a 320k machine. Not so with the Rambo, it *replaced* the 64k base RAM with 256k, but since 64k are still required as base RAM you merely have 64k base RAM plus 192k extended RAM (total = 256k RAM). In other words: CS is the same as Megaram 1-3, all have a total of 320k RAM, whereas Rambo is the same as Buchholz and Newell, they have only a total of 256k RAM...

Well, now for the emulator: it sets CS as a 320k machine which is correct, but it also sets Rambo as a 320k machine which is not fully correct (it should say TOMS or Atari Magazine here to avoid confusion with original Ataris and original RAM upgrades). Just take a look at my Ramdisk info article (or overview) which should make some things clearer or even more confusing. Finally, only two demos exist that really require 1 Megabyte extended memory: a) the raytracing demo by ABBUC member solocoder of Ace (a stupid raytracing demo that comes on 8 bootdisks) and b) the BRULL sample demo that was released a short time ago...

Well,
tested YAKF on a real Atari (with 576k RAM) and it did not work - crashes while loading or after de-packing...  Hopefully future versions will also work on the real hardware and not only on the emulator...   -Andreas Magenheimer.

Hey Jaskier,
your TMC 1.0 to TMC 2.0 converter works only on the PC (under Windoze). Any chance to get such a converter for the Atari ?!? Or at least a converter that works on the PC under DOS ?!?   -Andreas Magenheimer.

Hello Epi,
yes I will be patient. And as said before, more important than a plug-in of SAP into NEOtracker are the two mentioned updates.  Besides, I tested the SAP player on a 130XE after an american atarian reported me, that it does not work there. Alas, he was right. The SAP player does not work on a 128k Atari (like 130XE), you merely see a short Error message (something like "...sorry not enough XRAM..." or so, it disappears so fast, that I cannot read it) and then you are returned to DOS or DUP. Thats it. This should be fixed fast, as well as the mentioned lack of a DIR option...  greetings, Andreas Magenheimer.

Well,
to support Lepix in any way, here is my *.CIN collection (just a collection, I did not paint any of these pix)...   -Andreas.

[ Dodano: Thu Jan 13, 2005 19:19 ]
Err well,
I like the Gr. 15 RGB mode (RLE compressed R, G, B pics with up to 64 colors), allthough it flickers quite heavily...   -Andreas.

Well,
here is some more support for Lepix, my INT and INP pix collection...   -Andreas.

Well,
more important than a plug-in of *.SAP to the NEO-player would be the mentioned updates for the separate SAP-player:

- update the SAP-player, so that it is possible to show a directory...
- make the SAP player work on 128k machines...

When done, I can convert all >1800 SAP files into 8.3 filenames (currently without any directory option this does not make sense to me) for the XL/XE computers with a minimum of 128k RAM...   -Andreas.
