Hello,
someone told me that there is / will be a new version of SAP player (or a kind of plug-in for the Neo-Tracker) under development. My wishes for a new SAP player version:

- include a directory option (since there are more than 1800 SAP files available; no-one can remember all these filenames);
- make SAP player work on 128k machines (at current it displays "not enough memory", which is stupid since only 4 rambanks are used);

And if the author (Epi) is really thinking about a plug-in of *.SAP for the Neo-tracker, why not think about a plug-in of *.WAV (or PCM) files too ?!? just some thoughts / wishes.  greetings, Andreas Magenheimer.

well,
I always used the Megaplayer (by MacGyver) to playback any CMC, MPT and TMC sounds. Since TMC 1.x and 2.x are no longer compatible with each other, we need a new player program...    -Andreas.

P.S.: Hey MacGyver, are you still alive ?!? How about a new Megaplayer program for TMC 2.x and other sound formats (like The Soundmachine, Benjy Soundmon., Pegasus Soundmon., Soundmon Prof., Musica, KE Music Editor, Music Construction Set/Kit, ...)

well,
how about implementing MCS and GED into future Lepix painting program ?!? -Andreas.

(22 odpowiedzi, napisanych Scena - 8bit)

Well,
I would like Lepix to support GED or MCS. RIP and RGB would also be very cool (have some sources for GED and RGB)...   -Andreas.

Well,
a little out of topic (maybe) - did you notice that CIN 2.0 has a little bug ?!? It can load and save compressed + uncompressed CIN pics (and convert MIC into CIN). Alas, if you save CIN pics uncompressed in CIN 2.0 they are saved with 124 sectors instead of 132 sectors as they should be... Has anyone ever corrected this bug ?!?  -Andreas Magenheimer.

Well,
I have a small collection of 14 ED disks full of MPT sounds at home (plus Mega-Player 1.6 by Macgyver to playback these sounds)... if interested send me an e-mail and I will return the zipped ATR images to you.

Besides, Mega-Player works well with the old TMC sound files, but I guess we need another player for the TMC 2.x files - any volunteers...?!?   -Andreas Magenheimer.

Hello folks,
one important note: We changed the sentence "ABBUC has the right of a premiere-release of the contest programs..."  into "ABBUC has the right to release the contest programs on its magazines."  Nice, isn`t it ?!? This means, we do not care if the programs have already been published in other magazines (like Flop, Serious, Syzygy, etc.) or on someones homepage(s)...   greetings from ABBUC - Andreas Magenheimer.

[ Dodano: Pon Lis 29, 2004 15:15 ]
Hello folks,
how do you take part at the software-contest ?!? Simply register your program at the ABBUC homepage (name of author, name+type of program, thats all) or send me your software and/or the details about it and I will register it for you. You can reach me via e-mail at:  software at abbuc . de     Greetings - Andreas.

P.S.: If you send the final version of your program, do not forget to give me your adress and/or your bank account, so I can send the price after the contest is over...

Hello Folks,
in the attachment you will find the new rules for the ABBUC software contest 2005. The rules are currently available in german, english and czech language. I guess someone is still working on the polish version 7 translation. Many thanks to Raster / Radek Sterba for the czech translation...

Now, if you want to take part at the ABBUC software contest, simply send your programs to:   software@abbuc.de
greetings from ABBUC - Andreas Magenheimer.

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

English Version:

Rules for the ABBUC-Software-Contest 2005:

1) General Rules:

The Deadline for the software-contest has been set to 31.August 2005 (until midnight).
ABBUC will therefore spend the following Prices:     1st Place:  500 Euro
    2nd Place: 250 Euro
    3rd Place: 125 Euro
    4th Place:   75 Euro
    5th Place:   50 Euro
For all registered contest programs, ABBUC will get the right of a premiere-release on its magazine; the Copyright will still remain by the author, who can use his program freely after the contest. The presentation of the programs will take place at the Unconventional fair in September and on the ABBUC magazines, whereas the decision and pricing will take place at the annual ABBUC meeting in October. There is no need for the author to be present at any of these events, the price will still be send to the author?s postal adress or his bank account, provided that ABBUC has these adresses...

2) Program Types & Size:

The software-contest programs must be one of the following program-types:
a) Game/s, b) Application/s (also Tools, Utilities, etc.) and c) Operating Systems (DOS).
Not allowed are any kinds of demos or intros, also not allowed are any beta- or pre-versions (meaning the contest programs must be finished). For compatibility reasons one must make sure, that the programs work at least on Atari XL or XE computers, which means standard 64k or 128k machines. Additional or extra hardware can be supported, but it must not be a requirement to own this extra hardware to load the program. Believe it or not, the ABBUC Software Ressort, as well as all ABBUC members, will do a ?Quality? and ?Compatibility? check of all registered contest programs...

3) Format and Languages:

The software-contest programs can be send as 5,25? Atari disk(s) or as ATR-image(s), but they must use Single (90k) or Enhanced (130k) density. Furthermore, the program must have a short documentation, this can be included in the program (internally) or as a separate text-file (externally). It is therefore important, that one uses german or at least english language (and explains shortly how the program has to be loaded), so that everyone can handle the program. All Atari 8Bit compatible languages are allowed as programming languages, but all of them have to be compiled in the end, so that one can load the program without having to own a certain programming language. The only exceptions here are Atari Basic and Turbo Basic XL source listings, since every Atari user owns these languages. Lastly one needn?t supply any source-codes for the contest programs, the finished loadable or executable program is enough...

Happy programming wishes the ABBUC Software Ressort !!

Deutsche Version:

Regeln für den ABBUC-Software-Wettbewerb 2005:

1) Allgemeine Regeln:

Also dann, viel Spaß beim Programmieren - euer ABBUC Software Ressort.
(Charlie Chaplin / Andreas Magenheimer)

Prověření kvality a kompatibility všech soutěžních příspěvků bude provádět ABBUC Software Ressort a všichni členové ABBUCu.

3) Formát a programovací jazyky:

(CharlieChaplin / Andreas Magenheimer)

         (blocks 0123456789ABCDEF = 16 blocks * 16 banks)
- Types: Newell, FTE, selfmade-Ramdisks...

Well, I will not go into details with the disadvantages and
software-problems with ramdisks beyond 512k RAM (Selftest, XL/XE Basic,
RAM under the OS, separate Antic access, etc.). These problems mostly
occur with 1 Megabyte or bigger ramdisks and there are several hardware
and software solutions for them, alas not working correct with every
software or program. With 4 Megabyte extra RAM / Ramdisk, the PIA is
fully used/adressed, so that normally the base RAM at 4000-7FFF is not
available any longer. But again, there are tricks and solutions to solve
this problem. Installing a second PIA for example makes it possible to
adress up to 256 Megabytes of extra RAM / Ramdisk - but who needs so much
RAM on the Atari 8Bit computer ???

C) XL/XE - XRAM minus 64k Base-RAM:

- Size:  192k / 8AE (total = 256k RAM, usable = 12 banks)
- Banks: 83,87,8B,8F,A3,A7,AB,AF,E3,E7,EB,EF
         (8AE = 3 blocks * 4 banks)
- Types: older Newell ramdisks (replace 64k by 256k);

- Size:  192k / ACE (total = 256k RAM, usable = 12 banks)
- Banks: A3,A7,AB,AF,C3,C7,CB,CF,E3,E7,EB,EF
         (ACE = 3 blocks * 4 banks)
- Types: newer Newell RDs, newer Buchholz-RDs, Rambo-XL,
selfmade Ramdisks (replace 64k by 256k)...

- Size:  448k / 2468ACE (total = 512k, usable = 28 banks)
- Banks: EF,EB,E7,E3,CF,CB,C7,C3,AF,AB,A7,A3,8F,8B,87,83
         6F,6B,67,63,4F,4B,47,43,2F,2B,27,23
         (2468ACE = 7 blocks * 4 banks)
- Types: selfmade-RDs (replace 64k by 512k)...

- Size:  896k? / 0248ACE (total = 1024k, usable = 56 banks)
- Banks: EF,ED,EB,E9,E7,E5,E3,E1,CF,CD,CB,C9,C7,C5,C3,C1,
         AF,AD,AB,A9,A7,A5,A3,A1,8F,8D,8B,89,87,85,83,81,
         4F,4D,4B,49,47,45,43,41,2F,2D,2B,29,27,25,23,21,
         0F,0D,0B,09,07,05,03,01 (0248ACE = 7 blocks * 8 banks)
- Types: Bob Woolley`s 1200XL 1MB Upgrade, selfmade-RDs
         (replace 64k by 1024k)...

Allthough these RAM upgrades are relatively easy to build
(and to install into the computer), they make problems with
quite some software. Some programs tend to use the base RAM
as extra RAM / Ramdisk with these upgrades, which will most
often result in a crash of the computer. Next, most extra RAM
testers will show more extra RAM (or a bigger Ramdisk) than
there is really available (e.g. with a 256k upgrade you will
see 240k extra RAM, but there is only 64k base RAM + 192k
extra RAM). Alas, this is a typical hardware problem for these
upgrades and it cannot be solved or avoided with software...

D) XL/XE: Parallel-Bus-Devices:
(600XL/800XL = Parallel Bus, XE = Cart.-Port + ECI)

- Size:  128k / AE (total = 192k RAM, 8 banks)
- Banks: A3,A7,AB,AF,E3,E7,EB,EF (blocks AE = 2 blocks * 4 banks)
- Types: Turbo-Freezer-XL by Bernhard Engl with 128k XRAM

- Size:  256k / 9ABE (total = 320k RAM, 16 banks)
- Banks: 93,97,9B,9F,A3,A7,AB,AF,B3,B7,BB,BF,E3,E7,EB,EF
         (blocks 9ABE = 4 blocks * 4 banks)
- Types: Turbo-Freezer-XL by Bernhard Engl with 256k XRAM

- Size:  256k / ??? (total = 320k RAM, 16 banks)
- Banks: unknown !!
- Types: Yorky-XL by Richard Gore / Derek Fern (from
         GB/UK) with 256k XRAM

- Size:  256k / ??? (total = 320k RAM, 16 banks)
- Banks: unknown !!
- Types: Multi-Input-Output-Harddisk-Interface (MIO) with 256k
         XRAM by ICD

- Size:  1024k / ??? (total = 1088k RAM, 64 banks)
- Banks: unknown !!
- Types: Multi-Input-Output-Harddisk-Interface (MIO) with 1024k
         XRAM by ICD

E) XL/XE: RAM/Flash-ROM/... Cartridges:

- Rambox II with 256k RAM by JRC (Czech Republic; with special
Ramdisk drivers for TT-DOS and Bewe-DOS!)
- Ramcart 128k by ??? (Poland or Czech Republic)
- Ramcart 256k by ??? (Poland or Czech Republic)
(for some hints and pics see: www2.asw.cz/~kubecj/acarts.htm)
- Flash-ROM cart. 512k by Stefan Dorndorf (Never released! But I do own
a non-functional prototype-pcb; it should have used 64k for the OS
and the remaining 448k as user-memory; the chip was organized in 64k
blocks, thus the min. program space would always have been 64kbytes!)
- Flash-ROM cart 128k / 1Mbit "Atarimax" by Stephen Tucker
(allthough they are not usable as extra RAM / Ramdisk at the moment,
I am quite sure that it is possible to write some drivers and thus
use the Atarimax Flash-ROM carts as extremely fast floppy drives!)
- Flash-ROM cart 1024k / 8Mbit "Atarimax" by Stephen Tucker
(for information and complete documentation plus software see:
  www.atarimax.com/flashcart/documentation/index.html )
- and many others I do not know and I do not have any info about;

Even cartridges can be used as Ramdisks (= fast floppy drives),
especially RAM-carts or Flash-RAM carts. But they function like
most other Super- or Mega-Carts, meaning the bank-switching
techniques are also used there. Since the subject carts and
bank-switching carts is quite enormous, I will not discuss it or
present any information here. Just try to find a large description
by John K. Picken ("RAM/ROM Control on an XL/XE") if interested in that
subject (e.g. at Jindrich Kubec`s homepage: www2.asw.cz/kubecj/... ).

Finally thanks and credits for this subject and lots of (used /
borrowed) information therefore go to: Lee Barnes, Russ Gilbert,
Mathy van Nisselroy, Erhard Puetz, Mathias Reichl, Ron Hamilton,
Wes Newell, Guy Ferrante, XI of Satantronic, Bernhard Pahl and
Walter Lojek. Also thanks to John K. Picken who wrote an excellent
article about A8 extra RAM / Ramdisks and A8 cartridges and their
technique of bank-switching. Well, if you still find errors, bugs,
mistakes, etc. in this list, then tell me *nicely* or in a friendly
way. Any updates and corrections can be send to:  amp@abbuc.de

Yeah,
a friend of mine has promised me to translate the (abbuc software contest) rules into polish language... alas, I cannot do it, because I do not speak / understand polish language...  when the translation is done, we will present the rules here.  greetings, Andreas Magenheimer.

Well,
since the ABBUC software contest is over now, the authors of Dynablaster (Madteam) have the right to release the game freely (anywhere they want)... Just ask them for a copy or upload the game to atari-area...  -Andreas Magenheimer.

Hello folks,
the ABBUC software contest 2004 is over, so here are the results:

7th place: Jelly Beans by Crhis Martin won 50 Euro

6th place: Atari Greed by Winfried Piegsda and Carsten Strotmann won 75 Euro

5th place: RMT-Player XL/XE by Raster / Radek Sterba won 150 Euro

4th place: Hardwaretester by Florian Dingler won 200 Euro

3rd place: MyPicoDOS by HIAS / Mathias Reichl won 275 Euro

2nd place: BOSS-X by Mirko Sobe won 350 Euro

1st place: Dynablaster by Tomasz Biela won 750 Euro

This year ABBUC payed off all prices/money (the winners will soon get the money). Besides, ABBUC does not have the copyrights for these programs now, so all authors are allowed to publish these programs freely now (since the contest is over). Of course there will be a new contest in 2005 so you have time until October 2005 to code a) a new game or b) an application / tool / utility that will work on a standard 64k or at least 128k Atari. The rules for the ABBUC software contest can be found at www.abbuc.de in english and german language (and hopefully soon in polish language also). Happy coding and my congrats to the winners of this year!! -Andreas Magenheimer.

P.S.: I am not responsible for the results, I only want to present them here (approx. 100 ABBUC members voted for the contest)...

Well,
I do collect GUI`s and so far none of them made it to a standard on A8... In my collection are the following GUI`s / desktops:
- GOS 1985/86 (2 or 3 versions, looks nice, but thats it!)
- GOE 1988 (also 2 versions, supports mouse and Sparta DOS)

- XL-TOS 1987 (2 versions from german Atari magazine; absolutely lame - looks good, loads nothing, crashes always!),
- SAM 1988-89 (commercial version 2.x and type-in version 1.x from german Atari magazine; has lots of utilities, based on GEM of Atari ST; works with mouse and Joystick, can be enhanced with new tools easily - alas it merely works with DOS 2.5 ED format which was very popular at that time)

- ATOS 200? (complete GUI by TOM Hunt, with lots of tools and Sparta (only) support, alas the current version requires a harddisk partition 4MB or bigger or a good knowledge which parts are basically required to run the GUI from various disks and/or ramdisk),

- Desktop Construction Set (also by Tom Hunt, a sort of fore-runner to ATOS, available in 3 separate versions: a) DOS 2.5, b) MyDOS, c) SpartaDOS; since I never used it, I cannot tell much about it...)

- BOSS-XE and BOSS-X 1994-2004 (complete GUI written by Mirko Sobe in Turbo Basic XL; comes with lots of tools and many great ideas; supports MyDOS, subdirs and HD partitions up to 16MB; alas, is written completely in TB which takes quite some time to load: DOS-TB XL-GUI-program/tool),

- Diamond GOS 1988-1992 (available as a demo-version on disk and as version 1.x, 2.x and 3.x on super-cart. by Alan Reeve; the demo version is PD, the cart versions or better their ROMs are now freeware; this should have been the standard for Atari XL/XE computers, alas the Tramiels rejected the request by Reevesoft to licence this product and make it an official Atari product; in the end the GUI never really caught on; version 2.x and 3.x supported DOS XE, Sparta DOS, MyDOS and other systems with the capability of subdirs...)

well, there are dozens of other A8 GUI`s - think I even have some polish GUI`s in my collection, but as said before: none of them ever made it to a standard on the A8 and nowadays I have my doubts that any kind of GUI will ever do so. But hey, if you have nothing else to do, why not code another GUI... ;-)         -Andreas.

P.S.: If you are interested in any GUI just write an e-mail to:   amp#abbuc*de   and I will send you a part of my or my complete GUI collection...

Oh,
thanks for your replies. It is very sad that SoTe left the little Atari. Would have liked to see an update of MPT... But well, thats Atari life - the good ones leave too soon...   greetings, Andreas.

Hello folks,
as I have seen, there is a new versin of TMC available, created by Jaskier/Taquart. Afaik, Jaskier is also the author of Multi-Protracker. So how about updating Multi-Protracker for:
- two Pokeys (Stereo)
- four Pokeys (quadruple Pokey)
- Covox enhancement (8 Bit Samples!)
and other nice things. Well, I am not a musician, but I always liked the MPT sounds much better than the TMC sounds (maybe this will change with TMC 2.x). So why not upgrade MPT ... ?!? greetings, Andreas magenheimer.

Hello !!
Well, the completion of the game "The Brundles" took so long, that the guys of KE-Soft released a version with only 50-60 levels first. The full version with all 100 levels and 10 different soundtracks (and other neat stuff) was released about 6-9 months later...  I do not know right now which version has been released at atari-area. If it is the shorter version e-mail me and I will send you the full version - including the editor program...

Well KE-Soft and copyright - a funny thing. Kemal Ezcan (now Kemal Yun, he has married) left the Atari scene around 1995 and sold his rights. First he sold his rights to me ( I paid 2500 DM for them). About one year later he sold his rights again to Power per Post (Werner Raetz), that is also inactive right now (and sold their rights to Sascha Roeber). Again, one year later Kemal sold his rights  a third time - to ABBUC, Wolfgang Burger. So right now, I (A.M.), Sascha Roeber and ABBUC do have the KE-Soft copyrights. I want to make all KE-Soft programs available as Public Domain asap. ABBUC agreed to that, so I have to wait only for Sascha to agree. When its done, I will make the programs available at ABBUC homepage and anywhere else (when requested) for download. But I gues this will still take some months, so be patient...  Greetings, Andreas magenheimer.

Hello again !
There is also an editor available for the Brundles. It requires an ST-mouse in port B and is very awkward to use (thats probably why no-one ever produced new levels). But if you are interested, send an e-mail to  amp#abbuc*de  and I will send you an ATR image of it, complete with german and english docs. Note: The editor also requires the game-program "The Brundles"...    greetings, Andreas.

Hello folks !!
New in the games section (pliki gry) are the Brundles, a great Lemmings clone by KE-Soft. The game has 3 disksides, one for the program and two for the 100 levels. A short addendum to the online docs:
- Hold down SELECT while booting for the Config. Menu;
Here you can configure your Memory (64k extra = bank E, 128k extra = banks E+A and 256k extra = banks 26AE if I remember correctly) and choose a controller, like Joystick (port A), ST-Mouse (port B), CX-85 (numeric keypad, port B), Atari Touch tablet (port?) and Suncom Animation Station (port?). Don`t worry, the game also works fine with only 64k RAM. The extra RAM is only used to load the levels into the Ramdisk...   greetings, Andreas.

Hello folks,
Abbuc has decided to do another software-contest 2004. To avoid many confusions and mis-understandings we have also written new rules with many more details than before. The good news at first: Abbuc does not get the copyright for the contest programs, only the right to release them on the Abbuc magazine (thus the authors can do whatever they want with their programs after the contest)...  now here are the rules, dont be shocked, many of them are self-explanatory:

Rules for the ABBUC-Software Contest 2004:

that was it so far. Many rules are self-explanatory, but for some rules
you must keep in mind that Abbuc has 400 members and not all of them do have DD drives, harddisks, big ramdisks, etc. greetings from ABBUC -
Andreas. Magenheimer.

Hmmm,
looks like no-one knows the Killer-Whales animation or nobody has a version with two disks (or two images)... thats really sad. maybe I should upload this ani to atari-area or send some image via e-mail...

What other animations (converted to Ani format) by MadTeam (and others) are there for Atari XL/XE ?? I know and have:  Xfiles 1 (originally a PC intro), Xfiles 2 (originally the TV series intro), Manga ani, Killer Whales ani, Comet ani, Bill-Pie ani, Journey ani (file-version by MadMan, original version by Polynomials) and Worms ani/intro (by Datri). Are there some more animations ??

greetings, andreas.

Thanx for the info Dracon !!
With a speedy 1050 drive I have a little more luck: the demo works, but I have to slow down the drive (switch off the speeder) before booting/loading. thats a little annoying, but better than not getting the demo to work...   greetings, Andreas.
